PLASTIC INJECTION MOLDING PROCESS:

• DESIGN.  Have design questions? Our team can guide you through design best practices, including recommendations on wall thicknesses, plastic types, shrinkage compensation, radius limitations, weight reduction, finishing and stiffness. Once final design has been approved.

• PROTOTYPE. Prototyping is another opportunity to review design and identify product improvements before production.

• MOLD CONSTRUCTION. Our sister company handles the  mold construction and tooling design. Backed up by long years of experience in molding and tooling.  Using CNC machine for accurate design shaping.

• MANUFACTURING. Using the approved specification sheet, we manufacture your product using the most cost-effective method that meets your design standards.

• ASSEMBLY.   Products are then fully-assembled at our facility to further reduce costs. Etching and chroming services are available.

The mold tool is the key component in the injection molding of plastic:

1. It provides a passageway for molten plastic to travel from the injection cylinder (barrel) to the mold cavity.
2. It allows the air which would be trapped inside when the mold closes to escape.  If the air could not escape (be vented) then the molded component would contain voids (air bubbles) and have a poor surface finish.
3. It cools the molding until it sets.  The temperature of the mold is controlled because it is important that the molding cools at the correct rate to avoid distortion and stress.  In most systems water circulates through channels drilled through the mold similar to a car engine cooling system.
4. By means of ejectors the finished molding is pushed from the mold.

1. Guide Pins – fixed to one half of the mold and align the two halves by entering the holes in the other half.
2. Runner – passageways in the mold connecting the cavities to the sprue bush.
3. Gate – Frequently the runner narrows as it enters the mold cavity.  This is called a gate and produces a weak point enabling the molding to be easily broken or cut from the runner.
4. Sprue Bush – Tapered hole in the centre of the mold into which the molten plastic is first injected.
5. Locating Ring – Positions the mold on the fixed platen so that the injection nozzle lines up with the sprue bush.
6. Mold Cavity – The space in the mold shaped to produce the finished component(s).
7. Ejector Pins – These pins push the molding and sprue/runner out of the mold.
8. The Shot – Total amount of plastic injected into mold.
9. Sprue – Material which sets in the sprue bush.
